What is a dab rig? 

A Dab Rig is a small glass bong that is used in conjunction with a nail or banger to smoke extracts from herbs. These extracts can be in the form of wax, oil or resins and require a different type of bong setup to a traditional glass bong that is used to smoke flower.

So what is the difference between a dab rig and a bong?

A dab rig is typically smaller with less surface area for the smoke and less filtration. Unlike a typical glass bong you do not benefit from high filtration and large capacity, in-fact this is unwanted. For dabbing you want a small rig to simply convert the material into vapor without removing taste or potency.  

A nail instead of a cone piece.

For dabbing you will use a nail or banger instead of a cone piece, this is because instead of combusting the material, you simply want to dab it on to a heated surface and inhale the vapor that comes off. A banger or nail is designed to do this. The nail is usually heated with a torch and then the material dabbed on to it while you draw through the rig.
